What is 14/48; the world’s quickest theater festival?
Our Mission:
14/48; the world’s quickest theater festival, is
dedicated to creating a supportive environment for radical artistic
collaboration. The festival presents original works of the highest quality
while forging new connections between artists and artistic disciplines.

14/48; the world’s quickest theater festival is a new play
festival where fourteen 10-minute plays are conceived, written, rehearsed,
scored, designed and performed twice in front of a live audience in
48 hours.
The project transpires as follows:
Thursday night thirty actors, seven writers, seven directors,
and a corps of musicians and designers, gather in a theatre. Each participant
writes an idea for a theme on a slip of paper, and one slip is chosen
at random from the big hat. Past themes have included “The American
Dream,” “Instant Karma,” and even the much-regretted
“Boots.”
The seven writers are given the size and gender of their cast, and retire
to their place of choice to write a ten-minute play on the theme, which
they e-mail to production central by Friday morning at 8 AM.
Friday AM the seven directors choose a play at random, and draw
names at random to complete a cast. The teams then have the next nine
hours to rehearse, score, design, build and tech their shows before
presenting them at 8 PM.
The audience at the 8 PM show is invited to submit themes at intermission
and after the show one of the audiences’ themes is picked at random.
The actors and directors present another performance at 10:30 p.m.
while the playwrights return home to write yet another 10-minute play,
which they will deliver by 8 AM, Saturday morning,
Saturday AM the entire Friday process repeats itself. Saturday
PM after the final performance and bow, a blow out "closing
nite' party.

What you need to run 14/48; the world’s quickest
theatre festival
This is a VERY basic list of the requirements to create a 14/48;
the world’s quickest theatre festival. Put simply, you need an
empty theatre and the infrastructure to throw a really good party for
fifty guests that last three days.
1) Seven separate spaces in close proximity to one another to rehearse
seven plays at once.
2) An empty theater to tech and perform all shows
3) Event Staff
4) Absolutely no censorship.
5) Our inital active involvement. Why not just do this yourself?
So why work with us?
We’re not going to pretend that you couldn’t do an “instant
theater festival” like 14/48 on your own. Maybe you think you have
a better idea. Great. We have no monopoly on this process and have heard
of, and/or witnessed, many variations. We encourage you to join the
dozens of other theatres, arts organizations, and schools that have
been experimenting with this process over the last five years. Keep
in touch and let us now how it all turns out. We only would aske that
you refain from using name 14/48 as other festivals who embrace building
the larger 14/48 community use the name
14/48; the worlds quickest theatre festival has simply been at it longer
and does it better than anybody else. We started out eight years ago
doing the festival once a year, we now do four weekends a year. We started
with 37 artists and now have over 350 veterans of the process and can
not keep up with requests to participate. We started out as two guys
with an idea, and now have three producing partners and a seven member
steering committee. And we have never run a festival in the red, making
a profit and exceeding expectations has become a habit.
Work with us and you get:

years, all of which will be used to expand and improve the process
and reach of 14/48; the worlds quickest theatre festival to other
cities and countries.

Assistance with travel arrangements and accomodations in your town
for our visiting artists.
Call upon our wealth of history and experience and you can to relax
and enjoy the ride. Bringing in out of town talent with our obvious
cockiness raises the stakes for everyone concerned (including us), and
let’s face it, high stakes is what drives this beast. But let us
assure you that the festival will not be perceived as our project. You
will extend the invitations, you will provide the space, you will host
the festival. The presence of three or four visiting artists in a room
of fifty actors and directors will go almost unnoticed. We will be there
when you need us, we will not steal focus.
Our hope is that you will not consider this an invitation to do a festival,
but rather an invitation to join a revolution. 14/48 is an idea whose
time has come. We empower artists and are empowered by them in return.
